Jaggi Singh: “More than 500 people demonstrated tonite in Montreal during the 20th International Day Against Police Brutality. We gathered on Rachel, at Parc La Fontaine, and eventually we marched, after 8pm, for more than one hour. We marched onto Sherbrooke, south on St-Denis, and then against traffic on Ste-Catherine all the way to Cabot Square.
No demo route was shared with the cops in advance, we marched where we wanted to march, and the demonstration was militant (including many masked protesters). There was the usual huge police turnout (hundreds of riot cops ready just blocks away, police helicopter, mounted cops and more); but, for the first time since I-can’t-even-remember, the protest ended at Cabot Square with no arrests, and we dispersed when we wanted to disperse. It was beautiful to be with hundreds of others who together were united and defiant against the cops, despite the past decade of mass arrests, kettles, pepper spray and tear gas, all meant to try to shut down the March 15 demo.
